Kahlyn Gerstner, 8, plays a board game, Battleship, at Family Promise shelter with her mother. Syri Gerstner, 41, says she prefers to keep her children indoors, reading and playing games, when they are at the shelter. Homeless for the first time, Syri and her two daughters have been living in various shelters for two months. "I didn't know what to do, what resources, I mean I knew nothing, it was so scary — I just had to sit there for an entire day before I could take a step to do anything, because my mind couldn't grasp that I couldn't provide for my family." According to Family Promise, there is no city or county anywhere in the United States where a worker making the minimum wage can afford a fair market rate one-bedroom apartment.
